Juan G. Berumen, PhD
Juan G. Berumen, PhD, is a dedicated Oakland resident, filmmaker, and lifelong educator on a mission to address systemic inequities and redefine education for Black and Brown students, with a focus on unlocking their potential and strengthening their communities.
Juan's journey in education has been marked by his commitment to serving students from diverse backgrounds. He has a rich teaching background, having taught high school math in Los Angeles and facilitated GED programs in the Mission District of San Francisco. His passion for STEM education and afterschool programs led him to coordinate STEM programs in Oakland and Richmond schools, making a tangible impact on students' learning experiences.
Currently, Juan serves as an Ethnic Studies lecturer at UC Berkeley, where he not only educates but also documents the resilience and resistance of Black and Brown students. His work reflects his deep commitment to amplifying their voices and experiences within the educational system.
Juan has been a proud board member of Street Academy since 2018, contributing his expertise and dedication to further the school's mission and vision.
